Ex 01–04 | Gas and vapours
Installation, inspection and maintenance of Ex electrical & Instrumentation (Ex i) equipment
Why Ex 01–04 Matters
The Ex 01–04 qualification is the industry benchmark for core competence in hazardous area electrical work — covering installation, inspection, and maintenance of both non-IS and IS equipment.
Recognised globally across the oil & gas, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, and mining sectors, this certification demonstrates your ability to work safely and compliantly in explosive gas atmospheres.
Course Overview
Course Overview
The Ex01–Ex04 qualification is tailored for technicians and engineers responsible for installing, inspecting, and maintaining Ex-certified electrical equipment in hazardous areas where explosive atmospheres may arise from gases or vapours.
This course equips participants with the critical theoretical understanding and hands-on skills needed to operate safely, ensure compliance, and maintain the integrity of equipment in these environments.
What You'll Learn
Course Objectives
Upon successful completion, candidates will demonstrate:
Theoretical Understanding
- Understanding of relevant IEC standards, directives, national regulations, and guidance for hazardous areas involving explosive gas atmospheres
- Knowledge of hazardous area classification, including the influence of gas and vapour properties on zone types and extent
- Awareness of protection concepts for both non-intrinsically safe and intrinsically safe equipment
- Understanding of Ex certification, equipment marking, and key protection methods such as Ex 'd', Ex 'i', Ex 'e', Ex 'n' and other applicable techniques
Practical Competence
- Ability to select and install non-intrinsically safe and intrinsically safe equipment in accordance with IEC standards
- Competence in carrying out inspection and maintenance using IEC-compliant inspection tables and procedures
- Ability to interpret technical documentation and test results accurately
- Ensuring compliance with safety requirements across installation, inspection, and maintenance activities, including effective fault identification and reporting
